In general, the a DARK HERO hitting the market is particularly interesting.  It signals the X870E chipset end-of-life cycle, but most interestingly, it allows us to take a glimpse at what next year’s ROG boards will feature since most of them are being tested and gauged on the DARK HERO.

In short ASUS can hardly afford to get this one wrong! And they did not.

  • VERY POWERFUL 2,500 Amps power solution
  • Introduction of a 10 GbE LAN on a HERO motherboard
  • Fully revamped, high-resolution BIOS interface
  • Innovative Q-Connector for streamlined AIO cooling
  • One too many NVMe ( bandwidth could have been used more wisely )
  • no DOUBLE-BIOS feature

DESIGN

The DARK HERO plays on a “half-naked”, “half-dressed aesthetic”, to incept an “engineered” feel to the board. And frankly talking, it works!

OLED Screen

Bright and contrasted, it does give, to an otherwise sober and metallic world, a rather obvious accent of color, but it does remain static, with no useful information featured.

I don’t love it, I do not hate it. I just do not care much for this kind of aged, tacky RGB effort and would much rather see a rugged metal plating instead.

Other than that the DARK HERO stays sober and leaves to the user’s taste the management of all the its additional LED dressing through x3 ARGB (AURA compliant) 2.0 connectors.

We are dealing with a solid ATX 8 server-graded, ultra-low loss, PCB layered motherboard.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO PCB

This is the absolute best for signal insulation in such a bandwidth-rich environment which utilizes notoriously “signal-bleeding” PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 standards.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO BACK PLATE
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO BACK PLATE

In addition, the back is protected by an impressive aluminum backplate which, thanks to 7W thermal pads, doubles as a heat-plate for the VRM and chipset.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO Back Plate vs GLACIAL Back Plate
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO Back Plate vs GLACIAL Back Plate

The only remark I will make is that, on its more expensive ROG CROSSHAIR X870E GLACIAL, the back plate had one extra thermal-pad (left on the picture) to make use of the back plate a heat shield, and provide a larger thermal envelope to the notoriously hot USB 4.0 chip. This rather inexpensive feature has deep underlying performance benefits for the USB 4.0 plugs, and seeing missing on the ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO is rather disappointing.

But other than that, this remains about the best foundation available in the industry today for a long lasting and robust motherboard!

VRM Architecture

At almost half the ROG CROSSHAIR X870E GLACIAL price, the DARK HERO retains one of the most powerful VRM in the industry today.

VRM ARCHITECTURE :

The DARK HERO’s VRM powers three segments of the motherboards.

  1. CPU (the one people usually focuses on the most) controlled by a dedicated PWM Controller.
  2. MISC_RAIL ( V_MISC / VDD_MISC ) powers PCIe Lanes, IO connectivity and Internal Sensors.
  3. SOC_RAIL powers the iGPU and control RAM voltage.

CPU POWER

  • PWM Controller: DIGI+ ASP2205 ( 8 to 12 phases, mostly Teamed )
    • CPU : x22 110 AMPS Infineon PMC41430 power stages organized in 11 Teamed ( or parallel ) Phases.
    • TOTAL AMPERAGE: 2,200 AMPS

Across the industry, TEAM PHASES are replacing the more turbulent DIRECT PHASES architecture seen in previous high-end motherboards, mainly because they accumulate several advantages, for very few disadvantages.

  • Cheaper to make
  • Cleaner electrical signal, less noise and ripple
  • Better transient response
  • More endurant and stable ( less blue screens ) , especially in long continuous rendering sessions
  • Getting better in OvercLocking
  • More latency due to Doublers
  • Not as fast to handle quick CPU clock fluctuations
  • Not as good in extreme Overclocking

MISC_RAIL & SOC_RAIL

  • Richtek RT3672JE Controller
    • SOC_RAIL : x2 80 AMPS Infineon PMC41420 power stages organized in 2 Direct Phases.
    • MISC_RAIL : x2 110 AMPS Infineon PMC41430 power stages organized in 2 Direct Phases.

This is beyond what you will ever need, but it provides some thermal management since you will reach CPU clock limits way before utilizing 50% of these mammoth 110A power stages, thus somewhat limiting the heat produced, which is still very substantial.

Exactly the same power stages used on the insane ROG CROSSHAIR X870E GLACIAL!

VRM Cooling

The DARK HERO features about the most massive VRM cooling solution I have been the pleasure to play with!

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO VRM BLOCK
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO VRM BLOCK

On its own it is a beautiful peace of condensed 6063 graded aluminum ( Thermal Conductivity: ~200-201 W/m·K ) .

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO MAIN VRM BLOCK
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO MAIN VRM BLOCK

The main VRM block massive and plays on different cutting technique to increase its heat-dissipating total area.It also benefits from a large main wall, here to store and and feed the radiating roof with a constant and previsible waves of heat.

Talking of which, under the OLED screen, we can find a large and thick radiating roof ( in red on the picture ), which does an amazing job at radiating heat away at a fast and supported pace.

Both of our segments show a Double-Contact-Design, allowing a direct, thermal-padded contact, to both Powers Stages and Chokes alike.

VRM Temps

CPU chosen for the test is a RYZEN R9 9900X, 12 Cores, with 6 Performance Cores set at 5.7 GHz, and 6 Efficient-Cores set at 5.375 GHz

Testing method : Synthetic Stress Test
Software: CPU-Z

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO CPU THERMAL RESULTS

My Ryzen 9 9900X barely stayed below the 45°C resistance point. Compared to its more expensive ROG CROSSHAIR X870E GLACIAL, the DARK HERO shows much better thermals thanks to much larger cooling blocks, coupled to a slightly less powerful VRM.

From the VRM architecture, componentry menu, quality of cooling elements, to delivery control, ASUS absolutely aced it (again).

The DARK HERO balances an overwhelmingly powerful VRM with an extremely efficient thermal solution. In my opinion, surpassing its bigger sibling, the ROG CROSSHAIR X870E GLACIAL.

The Suggested CPU is obviously a Ryzen 9 class CPU. Anything below would be criminal!

RAM

The DARK HERO supports the usual 256 GB of DDR5 RAM, organized in a dual channel configuration ( upto 64 GB per slot, 128 GB per channel ).
Maximal advertized data swap is 9,600 MTs which is only achievable in a single stick configuration.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO RAM

NITROPATH DRAM TECHNOLOGY

As in many ROG motherboards, the DARK HERO comes with a clever resetting of the RAM slot plating, which does significantly reduce the “antenna effect” that higher voltage, higher density RAMs can incidentally provoke.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO RAM
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO RAM

In application it DOES WORK! And eventhough it is difficult to appreciate the real dataswap gain (in MT’s), I can safely bare witness, that it was easier, on such equipped motherboard, to obtain 8,400 MTs on a dual RAM stick configuration, than on others.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO RAM
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO RAM

To obtain these higher dataswaps, make sure to wisely choose your sticks. In my case I went for Hynix M-DIE architectured PATRIOT Viper Extreme 5 RAM modules ( 24 GB x 2 ) , a MUST for highervoltage and data-centric performance tasks.

STORAGE

ASUS saw things in big, in very big. All medium and standards combined, the ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO can support, simultaneously 9 Hard Drives. Rare and impressive.

  • x4 SATA III RX TX 6 Gbs
  • x5 NVMs RX TX from 32Gbs to 128 Gbs

SATA

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO SATA
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO SATA

The DARK HERO is one of very few premium boards which get a little help in terms of bandwidth management, other than our traditional CPU / PCH combo.

Two SATA plugs ( in blue on the pictures ) as well as 1 of the 3.2 (2×2 20 Gbs) front panel plug are fed directly by the ASM1162 controller from ASMedia.

This controller bridges the path between the SATA plugs and the X870E chipset to feed the exact amount of bandwidth requested, without having to appropriate an entire and dedicated PCIe lane.

Which would have been the case without the ASM1162.

A better bandwidth management which allows these kind of boards to be more agile and feature more componentry whilst limiting the use of PCIe bifurcation.

NVMe

PCIe 5.0 NVMs

  • x1 PCIe 5.0 NVMEs x4 CPU Lanes. Upto 128 Gbs
  • x1 PCIe 5.0 NVMEs x4 CPU Lanes. Upto 128 Gbs (shared lanes with back IO USB 4.0 plugs)

  • x1 PCIe 4.0 NVMEs x4 CPU Lanes. Upto 64 Gbs
  • x1 PCIe 4.0 NVMEs x4 CPU Lanes. Upto 32 Gbs

NVMe Cooling

In all cases, every single NVMe gets a luxurious double thermal padding treatment with thick thermal plates, to the exception of  the smaller NVMe.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NVMe Heatshield

One noticeable improvement the DARK HERO brings is the screw-less approach that all the NVMes heat shields now feature.

Something ASUS was stubborn to avoid until a few short months ago. So let us all stand and give approval applauses.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NVMe
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NVMe

But what is, arguably, the most striking piece of hardware on this board, is the massive main NVMe cooler, which is simply massive.

Featuring a large copper pipe extracting harvested heat through a “steam” chamber.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NVMe Temps

Which, in addition of looking particularly bad-ass, is also extremely efficient.

The thermal results are simply second to none and his is where I would put my boot drive for all these obvious reasons.

PCIe Bifurcation

The DARK HERO is less bandwidth starved than many of its competitors. And that reflect rather well on the PCIe mapping of the board, which guarantees all of its components dedicated bandwidth Lanes. Save one!

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E BIFURCATION

Our Secondary PCIe 5.0 NVMe and our back IO USB 4.0s do share 4 PCIe 5.0 Lanes. As shown above, out of the box, they are configured to share the lanes equally, availing half of the advertised bandwidth to each of them.

But, thought the BIOS, you can decide to sacrifice one of the two, and dedicate the entirety of the 4 PCIe 5.0 lanes to one rather than the other. Effectively killing the other one. But it did not need to be so!!!

The smallest NVMe connector is the only one not getting a double thermal padded-treatment, and gets only half the lanes all of the other NVMs get. This make me question ASUS absolutely insistence to add this, somewhat imperfect, 5th NVMe.

Fed by x2 PCIe 4.0 lanes, I would have much better preferred these PCIe lanes redirected to the BACK IO USB 4.0s to somewhat temper its PCIe bifurcation.  My 2 cents… obviously

PCIe EXPORTS

From intensive gamer to content creator, this PCIe Export shows-off the best there is in the industry… and a bit more.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO PCIe export
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO PCIe export

In a single GPU configuration, our closest Export to the GPU is the only one populated with 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes, for a 64 GBs worth of bandwidth each way.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO PCIe export
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO PCIe export

In a DUAL GPU configuration, lanes are shared in a 8 by 8 configuration, giving us a still very fast 32 FBs worth of bandwidth each way.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO DUAL GPU LOCK
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO DUAL GPU LOCK

The best part is the GPU LOCKING MECHANISM.

A noticeable walk back from last year Trigger based PCIe express locking mechanism which did, at time, slightly scratch the GPU PCB ( after 80 removals ). A nothing burger scandal which has the merit of delivering about the best GPU locking mechanism I have seen in a decade. So no regrets!

BACK IO

x1 LAN 5 GbE
WiFi 7 (Low latency 5.9 Gb/s, 320 MHz, 802.11be)
Audio: ALC 4082 with 3rd Gen Quad DAC

As everything else on the DARK HERO, the BACK IO is a land of premiumship! We have upto 130 Gbs worth of USB based data swap, but most importantly , we got a 10 GBs LAN plugs, which is a first for ASUS’ HERO series.

Absolutely great for UGREEN NAS users in particular which offers the 10 Gb access to quickly pull and edit 4K files, AND still have access to a low latency 5 GBs fiber optic connection. Absolutely grand!

Audio wise, we have the best of what integrated solution can offer. An all digital REALTEK ALC4082 codec, elevated by a 3rd gen. ESS® ES9219 QUAD DAC, and the whole filtered by 500 microfarads worth of solid capacitors.

Perfect for any premium usages, spanning from rich gaming environment, to static free content creation.

FRONT PANEL CONNECTOR

Special kudos for the upto 60W charging of our type-C front panel connectors.

COOLING

Probably one of my favorite part of this board, and a testimony on how daring ASUS can be.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO AIO Connector
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO AIO Connector

This extra connector is called the AIO Q CONNECTOR and will feed compatible AIO water coolers with power, software and PWN fan instructions, removing the need of any wires. Probably the last cable-free grail in the PC building world.

And ASUS had absolutely no fear, splitting the PCB in two and injecting this connector in there. I absolutely love it

In a more classic registry we got our usual PWM FANS and Water PUMP connectors for anything spanning from good air flow to a custom water cooling situation.

BIOS

THe DARK HERO, as well as the entire NEO line-up of motherboard, benefits from ASUS first fully redesigned BIOS in a decade. And it looks great!

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NEW BIOS
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NEW BIOS

Higher resolution, nicer graphics, better mouse handling (finally) and much more sturdy backbone, ASUS new BIOS comes in on most of the new NEO line-up of motherboards. And that is a bigger deal than you might think.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NEW BIOS
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NEW BIOS

It departs in all the good ways from its older version whilst remaining intuitive. And it is, without shame, that I say, this new BIOS is better than a lot of the windows based software ASUS had released the past few years.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NEW BIOS
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO NEW BIOS

To support such a nice enhanced and redesigned BIOS, ASUS had to upgrade the storage chip, going from 32 MB to 64 MB chips, which, in the DARK HERO case, came alone, which I regret! Its more expensive GLACIAL variant came with a “fail-free” dual BIOS, allowing to switch BIOS’es in seconds. A feature that, if it ever make its to the (DARK) HERO series, will elevate it to near perfection!

TROUBLESHOOTING

Obviously the DARK HERO comes with everything an uber premium board should come.

CONCLUSION

The ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO is everything I hoped it to be and more. It is a somewhat watered-down version of its GLACIAL more expensive sibling, but it managed to retain the most premium of the features, and the most daring ones too.

And despite a couple of adjustments I suggested, it remains largely one of the best board I have reviewed all year so far!

The VRM is an engineering marvel, culminating a decade of HERO evolution to something which will remain a power monster for at least the next 3 AMD CPU generations.

The introduction of a 10 GbE LAN, which is a first at this price point, will capture a large and new premium guided customer base.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO
The AIO Q Connector, about the most daring cable-less attempt I have seen in a long time, give an unopposed aesthetic and enthusiast edge to ROG TEAM in general.

And finally, the re-written, 64 MB based BIOS, changes the very inner work of the board, making it more agreeable and more sturdy to use.

Even the price doesn’t choke me. 700 bucks for a board is not cheap, but in if you are looking for about the best tech available in 2026 in PC building, gaming or content creator, the DARK HERO is the new boss in town.

Laurent

The never aging alpha geek is still here! Don't you dare question me!
