
We just covered the launch of AMD’s latest generation of gaming graphics cards, the RADEON RX 9070 TX and RX 9070, and more details are emerging about what could make these cards more dangerous to the NVIDIA’s more powerful but much more expensive RTX 5070 Ti, AMD’s updated AI frame generated engine : FSR 4.0.
FSR 4.0
FSR was AMD response to NVIDIA’s game-changing DLSS technology (Deep Learning Super Sampling). Based on AI dedicated cores (TENSOR COREs), RTX 2000 series were able to predict and generate some frames during a game, using AI, and therefore bringing some relief GPU. Major limiting factor at the time : only a few AAA games would support this feature since they had to build-in the DLSS API into their 3D engine.
NVIDIA’s DLSS was released on 2019, and it took two full years for AMD to play catch up and release their own AI generated engine, FSR ( FidelityFX Super Resolution). In 2021 AMD was not only late ( NVIDIA was already at version 2.0 of there DLSS engine), but it was also going the wrong way. Instead of generating AI based frems, FSR was limited to improve low resolution frames using an AMD in house algorithm.
Full frame generation only came with FSR 3.0 and required RX 5000 series Graphics cards (2023).
FSR 4.0 changes EVERYTHING
By 2025, AMD has caught up with NVIDIA and the 4.0th generation of FSR promises to double the Frame Generation of last year FSR 3.5 whilst keeping an UHD 4K output.
Only the RDNA 4.0 architectured GPUs will support FSR 4.0, so RX 9000 series and up.
THE PERFORMANCE GAINS ARE MASSIVE

FSR 4.0 VS DLSS 4.0
Even though AMD managed to bridge that technology divide in a very short amount time, NVIDIA’s head start is still present, and at best, FSR 4.0 is comparable to NVIDIA previous generation of AI frame generator, DLSS 3.5.
NVIDIA’s brand new DLSS 4.0 generates upto 3 frames for every 1 processed (decreasing with higher frame rates) against, well we don’t really know yet, but from what I gater, no more than a UHD frame for every two consecutives frames.
But where AMD lacks in performance, AMD gets in terms of pricing and availability. Truth of the matter is that AMD’s RX 9000 series graphics cards will be more present, more affordable and have a more reliable manufacturing process than NVIDIA’s and the RX 9000 series will undoubtable see a FSR update in the next 6 months.
With more AAA titles supporting FSR 4.0, and a more budget friendly option, AMD is about to poise a greater threat NVIDIA’s dominance in the GPU market, than it ever had before.
